Major John ELLIOTT 1726 - d 1780 Raleigh, Wake, NC, USA

John, a major in the Revolutionary War, killed near Raleigh, N.C.

John Elliott,( my John) fought as an officer in the RW and was killed or rather died in the war. He is or was the brother of my William Elliott who fought in the war and married Deborah White who left the Quakers.

Hello Dan,
I really appreciate all the work you did on this. Based upon that it seems to me that Elizabeth Gadberry, (daughter of James Gadberry &
Elizabeth Elliott), did indeed marry her first cousin, John Elliott, son of her uncle William Worth Elliott who was a brother to her mother.

First, this is how the subject John Elliott fits into the Gadberry family:

+ Elizabeth Elliott b. circa 1788 in Rowan Co., NC, m. 17 Aug 1807 in Rowan Co., NC, d. after 1860

+ John Elliott b. circa 1821-2 in Washington Co., IN, m. 24 Dec 1844 in Daviess Co., IN,

Second, I believe this is the above John Elliott's immediate descent:

Third, this is the proven connecting Elliott family relationships:> William Elliott b. before 1760, d. about 9 Aug 1809, in Rowan Co., NC

+ Elizabeth (?) b. before 1760, m. circa 1775, d. after 1820

3. Elizabeth Elliott b. circa 1788 in Rowan Co., NC, d. after 1860

++ James Lewis Gadberry b. circa 1786 in Rowan Co., NC, IN m. 17 Aug 1807

8. William Worth Elliott b. circa 1795-1798 in Rowan Co., NC, d. 6 Feb

++ Nancy Ann Bierly b. circa 1797-1798 in Rowan Co., NC, m. 22 Feb 1814, in Rowan Co., NC,
d. 5 Jul 1882, in Sullivan Co., IN

Conclusion: John Elliott and Elizabeth Gadberry who married 24 Dec 1844 in Daviess Co., IN, were first cousins. (I must emphasize that this is based entirely on circumstantial evidence for which I have about an 80% confidence level.)

The circumstantial evidence that led me to this conclusion is based on intermarriages between the Elliott, Gadberry and Harmon families which began
back in Rowan County, NC and continued for several following generations as >they migrated across NC, KY, IN, IL and MO, as well as a process of elimination. And, was a direct result of my research in July and August to go back and fill in the numerous gaps in existing research for the descendants of the sixteen (16) children of William Worth and Nancy Bierly ELLIOTT. It was one of those "light bulb going on" moments when you ask yourself "how did I not see that before!"
Finally, I would ask if anyone can disprove that John and Elizabeth were first cousins. Or, better yet, can anyone provide a primary piece of
evidence that confirms the relationship? Looking forward to comments,

Dan Elliott

James MAY have also had a son John that died in the Rev War. BUT William seems to be the ONLY son living at the time of his death.

notes from another Elliot researcher states:
John Elliott, my John fought as an officer in the RW and was killed or rather died in the war. He is or was the brother of my William Elliott who fought in the war and married Deborah White who left the Quakers. My source could not be sure who the parents of William Elliott were bute the will of James Elliott leaves everything(made Oct.4 1799 and was recorded in Orange CO., NC in May 1803 (will book D, p292) leaves everything to William Elliott. Robert was married 3 times, BUT had children (thus far) form first mar ONLY. 2nd wife Martha LOGAN(Mary LOGAN's sister) 3rd wife Martha MILLER.

Robert ELLIOTT (1784–1872) and his first wife, Mary LOGAN (1788–1822), were married in Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1807. They had seven children. the three youngest born after the family moved in 1816 to Monroe Township, Jefferson County, Indiana. Six of their children survived to maturity and had families of their own: Anthony Logan, Jane, William, Robert Jr., Martha, and James McClure.

More notes for ROBERT ELLIOTT:
Robert fought the British & Indians through Northwest Ohio in the War of 1812. He moved his family to Indiana in 1816. He was apprenticed as a boy to Lewis Castleman to learn the tanner’s trade. He later moved (what became) Dayton, Ohio & startd a tannery. Robert & Eliza were married by A. Chitwood.

Marriage sources – The Miami Valley Ohio Genealogical Index records Robert Elliott’s marriage to Mary Logan in 1807 in Montgomery County. This same index also records Robert’s wedding to Martha Logan in 1823 in Montgomery County. Robert Elliott’s War of 1812 Pension records give the date & location of his marriage to Mary Logan as April 7, 1807, Montgomery County, OH.

Woodford County, KY Court Records (p. 412) for June Court 1802 – “On motion, James Elliott & Robert Elliott infant orphans of Robert Elliott dec’d came into Court & with their approbation made choice of James Martin as their guardian. . .”

According to D. M. Elliott, Robert Elliott apprenticed as a boy to Lewis Castleman, a tanner. It is not clear whether Robert’s apprenticeship to Lewis Castleman began before or after his father’s death. His apprenticeship most likely ended when he reached age twenty-one in 1805. It is probably about this time that Robert moved to what is now Dayton, Montgomery County, OH, where he started a tannery & where he met & married Mary Logan on April 7, 1807.

According to his War of 1812 pension records, Robert was drafted into military service on Aug. 23, 1812. He served as a corporal under Major George Adam’s command in Captain Luce’s Company, first regiment, fifth brigade, first division, at Fort Greenville, OH, where he was honorably discharged on Feb. 23, 1813. According to his pension records, Robert saw no action, was not engaged in any special engagements, but did do duty as a scout.

He appears to have received 80 acres of bounty land in the late 1850s as a result of his military service in 1812. He was also granted a military pension in 1871.

Robert was a founder of what came to be known as Monroe Presbyterian Church in 1830.

The first known record of Robert Elliott in Indiana (at this time) is in James Vawter’s list of taxable property owners in Jefferson County for the year 1816 – Charles M. Franklin, “Indiana Territorial Pioneer Records 1801-1820,” Vol. 2, Heritage House, Indianapolis, 1985, p. 36.

David Elliott fought in the Rev war. Married Mehitable Aldrich and had 9 known children, one of which was Ensign David Elliott who married Deborah Elliot, a first cousin and daughter of John Elliot and Deborah Aldrich.

NEW NOTES:

Our Ensign David was born 1744 in Uxbridge and followed his father to Kingsbury after the raid on the Elliott Farm in Dutchess County by the soldiers. He is listed in Beekman Patent Papers as living with wife Deborah and son Peter.

(This is NOT the same David who married Lucy Campbell and Hannah Adams)

!SOURCE U0478 !PROV

Tombstones of David and his wife were reported as readable in a small cemetery in Kingsbury in 1967 by Marshall E. Lignian, Sr.

Some sources indicate that David's wife, Mehitable Aldrich was a sister to Deborah Aldrich who married David's brother, John.

David was in Uxbridge, Sutton, MA and lived there until 1760 when they came to Dover. David and Mehitable joined the Dover First Baptist Church, Wingdale in the 1760s.

David was taxed in Beekman and Pawling from 1761 through 1774. David removed from Dover before the revolution to Kingsbury, NY.

John ELLIOTT and Patience QUIGLY

Muster rolls for Fermanagh show that many of these families were in the Ulster plantation in Northern Ireland in 1661. JOHN ELLIOTT of Path Valley was born about 1715 in the north of Ireland. Family tradition says he came from Fincastle, in the Templecarn Parish, partly in County Donegal and partly in County Fermanagh.

It is possible that he (JOHN ELLIOTT) was first married to a HOGAN, but in America, his wife was PATIENCE QUIGLEY. Again tradition says that with John and his family, came George Elliott, and if this is true, GEORGE ELLIOTT settled in Rockbridge county, Virginia, and was later known as Captian George Elliott.

It has been thought that the relationship was that of cousins and/or a brother??? IT now looks as if Capt. George was a nephew to this John...This John was a brother to Capt.George's father???

BENJAMIN ELLIOTT of Ddublin Township, Bedford Co., Feb. 17, 1796 - Gen. Soc., Vol. 10, P. 165
JAMES ELLIOTT, merchant in Carlisle - son John in Ireland
BENJAMIN ELLIOTT of Dublin Township - no children

MARGARET ELLIOTT - husband William Ramsey
ANDREW ELLIOTT of East Caln Twp.- dau. MARTHA ELLIOTT BOGGS ROBINSON was the mother of the first white child born noth of the Allegheny - Gen. WIlliam Robinson. The first log home of Martha and James Robinson is pictured on the seal used by Allegheny when it was a separate city. When JOHN ELLIOTT first came to America, his home was near that of his brother ANDREW in East Caln Township - then Chester County.

John ELLIOTT had 11 children by perhaps 3 wives??? One of those children was Col. Robert Elliott, killed by Indians in 1794. He was married to Ann Duncan of Hagerstown, Md. They had TEN children, of whom one was my GGGgrandfather, Commodore Jesse Duncan Elliott, who had 6 children, Washington Lafayette Elliott, Maj. Gen. was my GGG; his son William Graham Elliott "begat" my grandfather, Col. Jesse Duncan Elliott, whose son Lt. Jesse Duncan Elliott was killed with my mother during WWII. I was their only child and my son is Duncan Elliott Barger, 34. I also have 2 daughters.
